Oxford University offer Rhodes Scholarships

The University of Oxford in the UK offers various scholarships for students from developing countries. Foreign students can study with these scholarships. One such scholarship is the ‘Rhodes Scholarship’. Students from other countries, including Bangladesh, can also apply for scholarships to study completely free of cost. Interested students can apply for this scholarship from last Monday (June 3).

One of the oldest scholarships in the world is ‘Rhodes Scholarship’. The Rhodes Scholarship is an international scholarship scheme to study at the University of Oxford, UK. The scholarship was introduced in 1902. English businessman and politician Cecil Rhodes started this scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship was to inculcate future civic leadership qualities and moral courage among students entering career. Initially, the Rhodes Scholarship was reserved for male applicants from Commonwealth countries (as well as Germany and the United States). Later it was opened to everyone. The scholarship scheme was initially controversial due to its denial of opportunities to women, founder Rhodes’ Anglo-white supremacist attitude, and association with British colonialism.

Among the recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship are former Pakistani President Wasim Sajjad, former Australian Prime Ministers Tony Abbott, Bob Hawke and Malcolm Turnbull, former US President Bill Clinton and several Nobel Prize winners. Several people have also turned down Rhodes scholarships because of the controversy.
